Ally McCoist Names Dyche, Lampard and Gerrard as Potential Rangers Bosses
Rangers legend Ally McCoist has suggested three familiar names as contenders to become the next permanent manager at Ibrox, with former Premier League bosses and a returning fan favourite in the mix.
With Barry Ferguson currently holding the reins as interim manager following Philippe Clement’s dismissal, McCoist believes the club needs to get the next appointment spot on — especially amid the potential takeover by the San Francisco 49ers Enterprises.
McCoist has floated Sean Dyche, Frank Lampard, and former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard as possible candidates. However, he acknowledged Lampard may now be out of reach due to his impressive form at Coventry City.
McCoist on Rangers’ Managerial Search
Speaking to the Daily Record, McCoist said:
“Who should get the job? I genuinely don’t know. Would they try to bring Steven Gerrard back? I wouldn’t be against that. Or someone like Sean Dyche? I doubt Rangers could get him now, but Frank Lampard was another I thought would’ve been a good option.
“I do feel for Barry [Ferguson]. He’s stepped in and has to work with the same squad that cost Clement his job. It’s rare to see a complete transformation just because of a managerial change.”
He added that the next appointment will be vital:
“This is going to be one hell of an interview process. They absolutely have to get this one right.”
McCoist’s Transfer Priorities for Rangers
As Rangers prepare for their Europa League quarter-final against Athletic Bilbao, McCoist weighed in on the squad’s biggest needs. Despite criticism aimed at goalkeeper Jack Butland following another error in the defeat to Hibs, McCoist doesn’t believe a new shot-stopper should be the club’s top priority.
“I’m not saying goalkeeper isn’t important — it’s one of the most crucial positions on the pitch — but I think Rangers need to focus elsewhere first,” he explained.
“They need a new centre-back, a striker, and another midfielder. Those are the areas that really need reinforcing in the summer.”
McCoist’s comments underline the importance of a strong managerial appointment and a smart transfer window if Rangers hope to rebuild successfully under new ownership.
