Gary Neville Lauds Ibrox as One of Football’s Greatest Stadiums

Gary Neville only had one opportunity to play at Ibrox during his illustrious Manchester United career—but that single visit was enough to leave a lasting impression on the former right-back.

As Rangers prepare to host Athletic Bilbao in a high-stakes Europa League tie, interim boss Barry Ferguson hopes his players can harness the passion of the Ibrox crowd—something Neville knows all too well.

Having made 602 appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson and lifted two Champions League titles, Neville has graced some of Europe’s most iconic stadiums. Yet, Ibrox holds a special place in his heart, and he continues to sing the praises of the atmosphere generated there.

Neville Ranks Ibrox Alongside Galatasaray for Electric Atmosphere

Neville, speaking on *The Overlap US*, reflected on his experience during Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Rangers in 2003, when his brother Phil scored the decisive goal. That night at Ibrox, he says, offered one of the most unforgettable football atmospheres he’s ever encountered.

“I’ve got special memories of Ibrox,” Neville recalled. “Phil scored the winner in a Champions League match. But honestly, apart from Turkey and Galatasaray, Ibrox was the loudest, most intense stadium I’ve ever played in.”

He added, “It’s absolutely incredible. The noise, the energy—how do they reach that level? I’ve never heard anything like it.”

Fellow Rangers fan and WWE star Drew McIntyre chimed in with a simple explanation: “Passion upon passion… it’s in the blood.”

Neville’s Testimonial Plan Blocked by Manchester Authorities

Neville was so taken by the Ibrox experience that he even wanted Rangers to be the opposition in his testimonial match in 2010. However, Manchester City Council rejected the proposal due to concerns stemming from the disorder that occurred during the 2008 UEFA Cup Final in the city.

While the dream fixture didn’t materialize, Rangers fans did return to Manchester this season—albeit in a losing effort—as they fell 2-1 to Manchester United in the Europa League group stages. Still, the legacy of that thunderous night at Ibrox in 2003 continues to echo in Neville’s memory as one of football’s finest experiences.
