Brad Hills’ Exeter Display Underscores Stockport’s Hopes – But Summer Stay Remains Unlikely
Stockport County have long known they’d love to keep Norwich City loanee Brad Hills beyond this season – and his standout showing against Exeter City has only strengthened that desire.
The 21-year-old has been a revelation since joining the Hatters in January, stepping into a thin defensive line and instantly proving his worth at Edgeley Park. However, given his age, form, and long-term contract at Carrow Road, the odds of County securing his services permanently remain slim.
That said, one possible scenario could leave the door slightly ajar.
Hills Shines in Unfamiliar Role
While there were plenty of positives to take from County’s performance at St James Park – such as Wootton’s poacher’s instinct, the impact of Jack Diamond and Jayden Fevrier, and Tanto Olaofe’s growing influence – Hills’ display flew somewhat under the radar.
Still, his numbers were hard to ignore: a game-high five tackles and ten duels won, all while slotting into a makeshift right-back role as manager Dave Challinor reshaped his system to squeeze in more attacking power. That tactical versatility, combined with his consistent performances, only adds to Hills’ appeal.
Permanent Deal Seems Out of Reach
Unfortunately for County, Hills’ impressive loan spell may end up working against them. He remains under contract with Norwich until 2027, with an optional extra year, giving the Canaries full control of his future. Given his upward trajectory – including a promising League Two spell with Accrington Stanley last season, followed by his step up in League One – it’s hard to see Norwich entertaining a sale.
Unless Stockport were to table an exceptional offer, they’d be unlikely to compete with other suitors or Norwich’s long-term vision for Hills.
A Championship Promotion Could Change Everything
There is, however, one glimmer of hope for Hatters fans: promotion. If Stockport can navigate the League One play-offs and secure a place in the Championship, they could emerge as the ideal next loan destination for Hills.
A familiar club, a trusted manager, and guaranteed minutes in a more competitive league could appeal to both player and parent club, especially if Norwich view another loan as the right step before bringing Hills into their first-team plans.
Short of that specific outcome, though, the prospect of Hills remaining in SK3 past the summer may remain just that – a dream.
