Rangers are reportedly in discussions to secure the signing of a highly sought-after forward on a free transfer this summer.
Rangers battle to goalless draw despite going down to 10 men
Barry Ferguson’s side showed resilience during their Europa League quarter-final first leg against Athletic Club on Thursday night at Ibrox. Despite going down to 10 men early on after Robin Propper was shown a straight red card, Rangers held firm to earn a 0-0 draw.
Goalkeeper Liam Kelly was the hero late on, saving a penalty from Alex Berenguer to keep the tie finely balanced heading into next week’s return leg in Bilbao. A spot in the final—set to be played in the Spanish city—remains up for grabs.
Reflecting on the performance, Ferguson said:
“I thought we defended really well and coped with their threat. Conceding goals has been an issue, and we’ve worked hard to address that. What I saw tonight was a team that really followed the game plan. The chat we had on Monday clearly had an impact. They played for each other tonight—you could see the togetherness.”
Off the pitch: Rangers targeting exciting summer addition
Meanwhile, off the field, 49ers Enterprises are in the final stages of completing their takeover, having already reached an agreement in principle. Despite the ongoing boardroom developments, preparations for the summer window are already underway.
One name high on the club’s list is Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku. According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Rangers are eager to sign the 23-year-old when his contract expires this summer and have maintained contact over a potential move.
Speaking to EFL Analysis, Bailey revealed that Rangers face stiff competition, with multiple English clubs—Birmingham, Crystal Palace, Millwall, Luton, and Norwich—also holding talks with the player’s representatives.
“Rangers are very interested and have scouted him several times. Talks are ongoing, although the takeover and managerial changes have complicated matters slightly,” Bailey noted.
Poku has stood out in League One this season, contributing to 23 goals—most of which came from his preferred position on the right wing. Last month, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman praised Poku, calling him “very impressive” and suggested Championship clubs should seriously consider making a move.
“He’s been on my radar for a while. He’s a ball-carrying winger who creates and scores. Whether he’s ready for the Premier League is up for debate, but he’s certainly one to watch,” Goodman said.
