Reece Walsh is still adjusting to life under Michael Maguire’s revamped Broncos setup.

Brisbane coach Michael Maguire has clarified that he hasn’t instructed Walsh to tone down his trademark running game, despite the fullback’s quiet start to the 2025 season. With just one try and one linebreak—both from the opening round—Walsh has come under scrutiny for a dip in attacking output.

While he’s managed three try assists since the Broncos’ dominant win over the Roosters, Walsh hasn’t shown the same willingness to challenge the defensive line, a hallmark of his play last year. His performances against the Raiders and Cowboys drew criticism for rushed decision-making in attack.

In 2024, Walsh tallied 14 tries and 18 try assists in 14 games. Though his stats have dipped, the 22-year-old appears to be settling into Maguire’s system, particularly with Ben Hunt steering the left edge. His defensive contributions have also seen marked improvement, with praise from both Maguire and teammate Patrick Carrigan.

Opposing teams have been targeting Walsh more aggressively in backline plays, which has led to some forced errors. However, Maguire dismissed suggestions that Walsh had been told to pull back, saying he’s encouraged him to stay true to his attacking instincts.

As Walsh continues to balance his attacking flair with improved defensive organisation, teammates have rallied behind him. Carrigan praised his leadership and communication on the field, while Walsh himself admitted he focused heavily on defensive development during the pre-season.

With the Roosters up next, Walsh has another chance to remind fans of his attacking prowess.
