The Wests Tigers have rejected a request from the North Queensland Cowboys to release captain Api Koroisau from his contract a year ahead of schedule.

As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, the Cowboys approached the Tigers about the possibility of releasing Koroisau, whose deal runs through to the end of next season. However, the Tigers declined the request, with head coach Benji Marshall stating the club has “zero interest” in letting their skipper go early.

“Why would we let a world-class hooker go 12 months early?” Marshall said. “Api is our biggest leader, that’s why he’s our captain.”

Marshall was firm that Koroisau would not be leaving early under his watch.

It’s understood North Queensland’s interest was influenced by the emergence of teenage hooker Tallyn Da Silva, with the Cowboys speculating that Koroisau might be surplus to requirements. But that assumption proved incorrect, as the Tigers remain fully committed to retaining the experienced No.9.

Marshall emphasized Koroisau’s role as a mentor to Da Silva, pointing out that hookers generally peak around age 24 or 25, giving the 19-year-old ample time to develop under Koroisau’s guidance.

“Tallyn will have the chance to gradually build his game, earn more minutes, and potentially succeed Api in the future,” Marshall explained. “But that’s a long-term plan.”

With Reece Robson set to join the Roosters next season, Cowboys coach Todd Payten is actively searching for a new hooker. Earlier this month, it emerged that the Bulldogs had floated Reed Mahoney to North Queensland, though the Cowboys chose not to pursue the polarizing rake.

Among hookers coming off contract, Tom Starling is the most notable name. The Raiders No.9 has started the season strongly, and Canberra’s recent signing of Jayden Brailey could pave the way for Starling’s exit.
