Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises are edging closer to finalising their takeover of Rangers.

The American consortium has been engaged in negotiations for a majority stake at Ibrox for a considerable period, but the deal is now nearing completion.

Despite the lengthy process, anticipation around the takeover remains high among supporters.

Barry Ferguson’s side managed to hold Athletic Club to a draw at Ibrox on Thursday (10 April), a result that likely pleased Cavenagh, who was in attendance.

Cavenagh’s presence a boost for Rangers supporters

Cavenagh’s appearance at Ibrox for the Europa League quarter-final first leg was viewed positively by fans. According to Daily Record journalist Keith Jackson, it signaled the investor’s commitment to becoming involved with the club.

Speaking on Hotline Live (10 April), Jackson stated: “It was an encouraging sign for the Rangers supporters that Cavenagh was there. It’s an indication that he’s determined to be part of this. And that’s the intention. If it’s not done by the end of this month, then I’d be quite surprised.”

Ibrox overhaul looms as Ferguson faces reality

While Ferguson may have ambitions of staying in charge beyond this season, recent performances have underlined the scale of the challenge. Despite guiding Rangers into the Europa League last eight, their domestic form has faltered — a 2-0 defeat to Hibernian at home on 5 April being a notable low point.

The squad is in need of significant rebuilding, and the incoming American ownership will likely have to inject serious investment during the summer transfer window.

One of their first key decisions will be whether to appoint a new manager or retain Ferguson, who remains a popular figure among fans. However, with a crucial off-season approaching, time will be limited for the new regime to lay down their plans if they hope to close the gap on Celtic.
