Rangers Eye New Manager as Ferguson Takes Temporary Charge – Mourinho Move Gains Momentum
Rangers are on the hunt for a new permanent manager following the mid-season dismissal of Philippe Clement due to a string of inconsistent results. With Barry Ferguson stepping in as interim boss, all eyes are now on Ibrox’s next big decision.
Although Ferguson is a potential candidate to lead the club beyond the current campaign, it’s unclear if the incoming ownership group will stick with him moving forward.
One name generating significant buzz is José Mourinho. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United boss has been linked with a sensational move to Glasgow, and his potential arrival is already winning support among fans and pundits alike.
Mourinho at Rangers Would Be “Box Office”
Scottish journalist Jonny McFarlane believes Mourinho taking over at Rangers would be a blockbuster move. Speaking on The Rangers Review (12 April), he said: “I would love to have Mourinho in at Rangers. I’d absolutely love it. I’d be totally down for that… Just imagine what would happen with him as manager. Can you imagine the battles with the SFA? Box office.”
While some, like co-host Joshua Barrie, might view Mourinho’s arrival as a step back, McFarlane dismissed those concerns, pointing to the drama and excitement the 62-year-old would bring to Scottish football.
US Consortium Could Make Mourinho Dream a Reality
If the incoming American investors can lure Mourinho to Ibrox, it would be a major statement of ambition. Despite a recent dip in his managerial reputation after mixed spells at United, Spurs, and Roma, Mourinho’s track record of 26 career trophies still speaks volumes.
Currently managing Turkish giants Fenerbahce, Mourinho might find the challenge of taking on Celtic and restoring Rangers’ dominance too enticing to pass up.
Before any move is made, however, Rangers must assess Ferguson’s short-term impact. His tactical acumen was on display as he led the side to a draw against Athletic Club in the Europa League quarter-final first leg, despite being reduced to 10 men early in the match.
While Mourinho’s appointment remains speculative, the excitement surrounding his name shows just how much the Ibrox faithful are dreaming big.
