Brisbane, AU – Brisbane Lions head coach Chris Fagan has come under increased scrutiny after club captain Dayne Smith publicly questioned the team’s attitude following a stunning defeat to the Gold Coast Suns on Saturday evening. The Lions, widely tipped as premiership contenders, slumped to a 91-65 loss at Heritage Bank Stadium, leaving fans and pundits baffled by the team’s lackluster display.

The loss marked Brisbane’s third defeat in four games, but it was the manner of the performance that sparked alarm bells. The Lions were outworked, outmuscled, and seemingly out of answers against a Gold Coast outfit that showed more hunger and intensity from the opening bounce.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Smith didn’t hold back in his assessment of the team’s performance.

“Our attitude just wasn’t there tonight,” said the Lions skipper. “We came into the game flat, and it showed. Gold Coast wanted it more, and that’s unacceptable at this level. We’ve talked a lot about standards this season, and right now we’re falling well short.”

Smith’s candid comments echoed the sentiments of a frustrated fanbase, many of whom voiced their disappointment across social media platforms in the hours following the final siren. The 26-point loss not only dented Brisbane’s ladder position but also raised fresh doubts about their consistency and mental toughness in big moments.

Coach Chris Fagan acknowledged the criticism but defended his team’s effort in patches.

“We had a poor start, and that put us on the back foot,” Fagan said. “But we fought back in the second quarter and showed glimpses of the footy we want to play. Unfortunately, it wasn’t sustained over four quarters. That’s something we have to address urgently.”

However, Smith’s remarks suggest deeper concerns within the playing group. When asked if there were cultural or motivational issues at play, the captain was blunt.

“I don’t think it’s a cultural issue, but there’s definitely something off. Whether it’s complacency or just a lapse in intensity, we need to look each other in the eye and figure it out,” he said.

With a blockbuster clash against Melbourne looming next weekend, the pressure is mounting on the Lions to respond. The Demons are flying high after a convincing win over Fremantle, and anything less than a spirited performance from Brisbane could spell trouble for Fagan’s men.

Veteran midfielder Lachie Neale also weighed in after the match, calling for unity and resilience.

“We can’t panic, but we need to be honest with ourselves,” Neale said. “This is a big test for us, and we’ve got to embrace it as a group.”

While one loss doesn’t define a season, the nature of Saturday’s defeat – and the internal questions now being asked – have placed Brisbane firmly under the microscope. The response in the coming weeks could determine not just their finals hopes, but the direction of the club moving forward.
