Norwich City winger Onel Hernandez faces an uncertain future after being suspended for misconduct related to social media activity.

Head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup confirmed that the 32-year-old was omitted from the squad for the clash against Sunderland due to disciplinary reasons. While Thorup avoided delving into specifics, he acknowledged the issue stemmed from Hernandez’s online behaviour, with reports suggesting the Cuban international had engaged with posts critical of both the club and the head coach.

Contract questions arise after suspension

Thorup addressed the situation in an interview with BBC Radio Norfolk, stating:

“It’s a disciplinary issue. How Onel responds and reacts will determine what happens next. Mistakes have consequences.”

The suspension adds to growing questions about Hernandez’s long-term future at Carrow Road. Despite signing a two-year contract extension in April 2023, which runs until June 2025 with an option for an additional year, his £19,600-per-week salary now appears increasingly difficult to justify. His influence on the pitch has waned, with just 568 minutes across 21 Championship appearances this season — only five of which have been starts — and a return of zero goals and three assists.

From promotion hero to fringe figure

Once a vital part of Norwich’s promotion pushes, Hernandez’s role in the squad has sharply declined. His reduced playing time, combined with disciplinary issues, paints a picture of a player who may no longer be central to the club’s plans.

Though Thorup hasn’t ruled out a comeback, saying, “You can always fight your way back,” the timing of the situation makes a summer departure seem more likely. With just over a year left on his deal and limited opportunities on the pitch, Norwich may opt against triggering the extension clause.

A decision looming for both player and club

Hernandez, who joined the Canaries in January 2018 and has made over 200 appearances, remains a well-liked figure among fans. However, club leadership is unlikely to let sentiment drive decisions, especially with Thorup prioritising professionalism and discipline.

The coming weeks could prove decisive. Hernandez must choose whether to mend fences and push for a late-career resurgence in Norfolk, or begin exploring his options elsewhere — potentially bringing a close to a significant chapter in both his career and Norwich City’s recent history.
