Jimmy Thelin’s inconsistent run with Aberdeen this season is expected to take him out of the running for the Rangers managerial role, sources have informed Football Insider.

Thelin’s stock was high early in the season as Aberdeen got off to a flying start—winning their first 13 games across all competitions and staying unbeaten until November. His early success led to links with several managerial positions.

Back in October, former Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that Thelin challenging Celtic and Rangers for the title would be a major boost for Scottish football. However, that scenario never materialized.

Since November, Aberdeen’s form has dipped, and they now sit fifth in the Premiership. Due to this decline, insiders say it would be a major shock if Rangers chose to appoint the Swedish coach.

Rangers eyeing high-profile boss

Football Insider recently reported that Rangers’ incoming owners, 49ers Enterprises, are planning to unveil a new manager at season’s end, with a bold and ambitious appointment expected.

Sources suggest that the 49ers are thinking beyond Thelin and are instead targeting a more prominent name to lead a new era at Ibrox.

Although Thelin’s Aberdeen beat Rangers 2-1 earlier in the season during their unbeaten stretch, the tables have since turned with a 3-0 loss at Ibrox and a recent 2-2 draw against Barry Ferguson’s rotated side.

Ferguson and Gerrard in the frame

Interim manager Barry Ferguson is still in the mix for the permanent job, with Football Insider reporting that his best shot at securing the role is by guiding Rangers to Europa League glory.

However, former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard—who led the club to the 2021 Premiership title—is also rumored to be on the radar for a summer return.

Additionally, Rangers are reportedly exploring a move for Marco Rose, recently dismissed by RB Leipzig, as they aim to bring in a high-caliber manager to steer the club forward.
