Leon Balogun is not expected to be offered a new contract to remain at Rangers beyond the current season, sources have informed Football Insider.

The Ibrox side are nearing the end of a disappointing campaign, with only Ianis Hagi’s dramatic 96th-minute equalizer at Aberdeen preventing rivals Celtic from clinching the title with five matches remaining.

According to Football Insider, Rangers’ incoming owners, 49ers Enterprises, are planning an aggressive summer rebuild with at least six new signings. However, the futures of several current players remain uncertain.

Among the four loanees currently at the club — Oscar Cortes, Vaclav Cerny, Neraysho Kasanwirjo, and Rafael Fernandes — only Cerny is expected to be signed permanently.

In addition, Ianis Hagi, Tom Lawrence, and Leon Balogun are all out of contract this summer, and sources have indicated that it’s “unlikely” Balogun will receive a new deal.

Balogun Set to Depart Rangers

Balogun’s second stint with Rangers has not matched the success of his initial spell. After returning in 2023 from QPR, the 36-year-old defender has played a limited role over the past two seasons.

Despite making 23 appearances this term and delivering some solid performances under both Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson, recurring injuries have hampered his impact. With his contract expiring and age factoring in, the Nigerian international is now expected to leave Ibrox.

Defensive Overhaul on the Horizon

While Rangers are keen to secure a permanent deal for Cerny, major reinforcements in central defence are also being targeted.

With Kasanwirjo and Fernandes unlikely to return and Balogun on the way out, Robin Propper could become a regular starter unless new defenders are brought in.

Football Insider has also reported that Celtic’s Greg Taylor could be set for a shock switch to Ibrox — potentially the first of several defensive additions in what promises to be a transformative summer.
