Pompey Loanee Kaide Gordon Could Face Former Club Norwich — But Place in Squad Uncertain
Kaide Gordon could potentially reunite with former side Norwich City on Good Friday as Portsmouth travel to Carrow Road in a vital Championship clash. However, it’s unclear whether the Liverpool loanee will even be included in John Mousinho’s matchday squad.
Since arriving at Fratton Park on transfer deadline day, Gordon had featured in every matchday squad until recently. Despite four appearances as a substitute, the 20-year-old was left out entirely for last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Derby County, with fellow Liverpool academy product Harvey Blair preferred on the bench. With no reported injuries, it appears Gordon’s omission was a tactical decision.
Whether he’ll be part of the travelling squad for the Norwich fixture is uncertain. Gordon’s short stint at Carrow Road earlier this season saw him make 10 appearances and score once, before manager Johannes Hoff Thorup ended his loan in January due to underwhelming performances.
Why Gordon Struggled at Norwich
Despite parting ways early, Thorup praised Gordon’s potential but felt the young winger didn’t offer the immediate impact expected of a loan signing. He admitted that while Gordon was a player he’d gladly develop long-term, his performances didn’t meet the demands of the Championship. Thorup highlighted the need for instant readiness in loan players, especially in a physically demanding league, and believed that Gordon would benefit from more consistent game time at a single club.
Pompey’s Enthusiasm at Signing Gordon
Portsmouth boss John Mousinho expressed his excitement upon signing Gordon, calling him an exciting attacking option with strong one-on-one ability. Mousinho noted that he’d been impressed by Gordon during a Liverpool PL2 match and saw him primarily as a right-sided winger with high potential.
Yet to Make a Full Impact
Despite the initial enthusiasm, Gordon is still awaiting his first start in a Pompey shirt and has seen limited minutes off the bench—just 119 in total. His last appearance came against Preston North End on March 15. Mousinho acknowledged that competition for wide positions has limited Gordon’s opportunities, with experienced players like Matty Ritchie and Owen Moxon currently in strong form. Ritchie, in particular, has been key in pressing, contributing goals and assists, and leading the side as captain.
Mousinho noted Gordon’s positive attitude and flashes of promise but emphasized the need to develop his end product. He stressed that no player should be content with limited game time and that Gordon still has time to grow and prove his value.
Blair Leapfrogs Gordon in the Pecking Order
Gordon’s absence against Derby and Blair’s inclusion suggests a shift in the pecking order. According to The News’ Jordan Cross, Gordon has yet to make a significant impact during his loan, with his brightest performance coming in a second-half showing against Luton. He was initially seen as someone who could relieve Ritchie later in games, but recent developments indicate Blair may now be viewed as the more effective option.
