Gerrard open to managerial return as Rangers show interest
A potential managerial target for Rangers is reportedly open to returning to the dugout, with Ibrox chiefs believed to be eyeing a move, according to a fresh update.
Managerial speculation at Ibrox intensifies
With 49ers Enterprises set to take charge of appointing Rangers’ next full-time manager following a deal in principle to assume control in Glasgow, the hunt for a new boss is heating up.
Interim manager Barry Ferguson is leading the team until the end of the season and has enhanced his prospects of landing the job permanently, especially after positive results in European competition and against Celtic domestically.
However, Ferguson isn’t the only candidate under consideration. Rafael Benitez was among the first names linked, and more recently, ex-Southampton boss Russell Martin and Strasbourg’s Liam Rosenior have emerged as contenders.
Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, who departed Ibrox for Aston Villa in 2021, is also being touted for a return. After a brief spell at Villa and an 18-month stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard has been without a managerial post.
While Gerrard previously stated he wasn’t in a rush to return, saying he was enjoying time away from the high-pressure environment of coaching, it now appears he is open to making a comeback ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
Rangers interested as Gerrard eyes UK return
According to EFL Analysis journalist Graeme Bailey, Southampton are currently considering Gerrard for their managerial vacancy – and Rangers are also keeping close tabs.
“Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are both on Southampton’s final shortlist to be their new manager,” Bailey revealed. “Gerrard, who is on Rangers’ list to return to Ibrox, is out of work following his stint in Saudi Arabia and is ready to return to the UK – we understand.”
Given his past success in Glasgow, where he led Rangers to their first league title in a decade back in 2021, it’s no surprise that the club’s incoming hierarchy are monitoring his situation. With Gerrard reportedly ready to step back into management, a sensational return to Ibrox could be on the cards.
