Johannes Hoff Thorup hopes Norwich City fans will continue to support Onel Hernandez despite the winger’s recent omission from two matches due to issues stemming from his social media activity.
Hernandez was left out of the squad for the goalless draw against Sunderland and missed the following loss to Burnley after skipping training. However, he may feature in today’s clash with Portsmouth at Carrow Road — his first appearance in front of the home crowd since being sidelined. Thorup, aware of Hernandez’s long-standing popularity with the fans, hopes the incident hasn’t damaged their bond.
“I hope they’ll respond the way they always have,” Thorup said. “As fans, it’s important to form your own views. Mention any player and you’ll likely get different opinions — that’s natural and completely fair. Some players are liked more than others, but the support should remain consistent.”
Thorup stressed the importance of accountability within the club but emphasized their willingness to move forward after disciplinary matters. “We have clear boundaries here, and crossing them comes with consequences. But once those are dealt with, we welcome players back — that’s fundamental to our culture. I hope the fans react positively.”
While not dismissing the benefits of social media, Thorup said the club had a constructive dialogue with Hernandez to set clearer expectations moving forward.
“There was a good conversation mainly between Onel and Ben Knapper,” Thorup explained. “They discussed what behaviour is acceptable and what isn’t — from both the club’s and the player’s perspective. We’re here to support him too. I don’t believe in banning social media entirely. It can bring openness to a world that’s often quite closed.”
“Still, players have to be careful — things can easily be taken out of context and blown up. It’s about finding that balance.”
