Rangers Insider Hints at Takeover and Reveals Surprising Internal Divide
A figure within Rangers has opened up about the ongoing takeover talk at Ibrox and shared insight into a surprising disconnect within the club structure.
Kevin Thomson, a former Rangers youth coach and ex-Kelty Hearts boss, has returned to the club in a different role following a spell in punditry. Speaking on The Warm Up, Thomson reflected on the club’s disappointing domestic season and recent Europa League exit to Athletic Bilbao. With Barry Ferguson currently serving as interim manager and the San Francisco 49ers’ Enterprise wing linked to a potential takeover, Thomson believes change is coming, even if official details remain scarce.
He said: “I think the takeover is progressing, though nothing has been confirmed. The season’s been tough and it’s clear the club needs fresh ideas and new energy. There’s hope that incoming investment can provide that boost.”
Thomson also highlighted an unexpected lack of connection between the academy and first team: “We’re in the academy and Barry’s with the first team—it’s like two separate departments. Barry and his staff have come over at times to bring in players, which is great, but you’d be surprised at how detached the academy is despite being just one level below.”
Reflecting on the Bilbao tie, he added: “I thought we could have gone at them more in the first leg. Rangers sitting back and playing on the counter didn’t suit that match. Knowing Barry and the players, I think they’ll be a bit disappointed they didn’t push harder.”
Still, Thomson is optimistic about the talent coming through. He pointed out that young prospects like Aiden McCallion and Rydnn McGuire made the bench for the Bilbao game, with McCallion in particular catching the eye.
“McCallion’s only 16 and has really stood out for the U19s. He’s got a strong reputation, already a Scotland international, and has handled training with the first team really well. The feedback’s been excellent—his personality, his touch, and his tempo have all impressed.”
