Barry Ferguson could soon be on his way out of Rangers, amid a surprising mention of Gareth Southgate as a possible successor at Ibrox.

The Rangers legend stepped in as interim boss earlier this year following Philippe Clement’s departure and is set to lead the team through the remainder of the season.

Ferguson is reportedly keen to remain at the helm beyond this campaign, especially as Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises continue their takeover efforts at the Glasgow club.

Despite steady performances, Ferguson’s hopes of landing the job permanently may have taken a hit after Rangers were knocked out of the Europa League quarter-finals by Athletic Club.

Southgate link dismissed over huge wage demands

Rumours linking former England manager Gareth Southgate with the Rangers job have been swiftly dismissed. According to Stevie Clifford of Four Lads Had A Dream (18 April), Southgate could expect to earn over £100,000 per week—an unrealistic figure for the Scottish side.

Clifford said: “Yeah, Southgate would probably command a wage of over £100,000 a week. So, you can forget about that.”

49ers urged to back Ferguson

Ferguson’s legacy at Ibrox—where he led Rangers to numerous titles as captain—still carries weight, and his current backroom team includes respected figures like Billy Dodds, Allan McGregor, and Neil McCann.

Results under the interim manager have been mixed, but there’s been a visible resurgence in passion and identity—something that was missing during Clement’s reign.

Though he may not be the most high-profile candidate, Ferguson appears to be the right fit. The 47-year-old has already impressed by outmanoeuvring the likes of Jose Mourinho and Brendan Rodgers this season.

With the title virtually out of reach and only the Old Firm derby offering real significance in the league, Ferguson has limited chances left to prove himself. However, a strong finish to the season could make a compelling case for him to be appointed permanently by the club’s prospective new owners.
