Hoskins Sotutu, the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific MVP, hasn’t had the smoothest season, having missed several early matches due to injury and suspension.

Despite these setbacks, the 26-year-old Blues loose forward delivered a standout performance in Christchurch, earning the Blues’ player of the match honor and scoring his third try of the season. His try in the second half showcased smart positioning near the ruck before shifting left to exploit a gap in the Crusaders’ defense, where Finlay Christie sent him a quick pass that Sotutu finished with strength and precision.

Even though the Blues narrowly lost 25-22 to the Crusaders, Sotutu lit up the second half with a highlight-reel play that drew global attention. Picking the ball up five meters from the try line, he flung a behind-the-back pass while falling to the ground, perfectly setting up AJ Lam, who evaded one defender to score.

Blues head coach Vern Cotter was full of praise for Sotutu’s all-around display. “He’s an incredible player with an amazing skill set,” Cotter told the media. “It wasn’t just the pass—he was strong in both attack and defense. All our forwards really dug in tonight.”

Cotter also highlighted the strong return of fullback Zarn Sullivan, playing his first match of the season post-injury. “It’s great to have him back. His big left boot and safe hands under the high ball made a real difference. He broke tackles and helped us gain momentum.”

On the ongoing debate about whether to go for points or aim for the lineout in crucial moments, Cotter emphasized the importance of player instinct. “I’m okay with not taking penalties if the players back themselves. Confidence and certainty are key. I don’t want to take initiative away from them.”
