Karl Darlow has now started the last four matches in goal for Leeds United, and Daniel Farke’s decision to drop Illan Meslier appears to be paying dividends as the club inches closer to Premier League promotion.
Following a poor run where Leeds managed just one win in five games, Farke made a big call by replacing Meslier—who was at fault again in the disappointing draw against Swansea. Darlow stepped in for the match against Luton Town and hasn’t looked back since. In his four starts, Leeds have secured three wins and conceded only twice, putting them firmly on course for automatic promotion. According to Opta, they now have a 99% chance of going up.
Leeds have recently been linked with several goalkeepers as they plan ahead for life in the top flight. While Aaron Ramsdale has been mentioned, his £30 million valuation makes that deal tricky. Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher is another target, reportedly available at a more manageable fee.
Now, another name has entered the frame—Norwich City’s Angus Gunn. Football Insider reports that Leeds are long-time admirers of the 29-year-old and plan to pursue him this summer. Gunn is out of contract at the end of the season, although Norwich are hoping to keep him with a new deal. With Premier League football looming, Leeds are looking to secure a reliable first-choice goalkeeper.
But is Gunn really an upgrade?
Statistically, Illan Meslier has actually outperformed Gunn this season. The Scottish international has allowed more goals than expected and has underwhelming numbers across the board. Despite his Premier League experience, Gunn doesn’t particularly stand out. Leeds may be attracted by the chance to bring in a seasoned option for free, but if Farke is seeking a long-term solution between the posts, he might need to explore other options.
