Jose Mourinho has emerged as a high-profile candidate to take over at Rangers once the 49ers-led consortium assumes control at Ibrox.
With Rangers’ season effectively over—having exited the UEFA Europa League and trailing Celtic by 15 points in the Premiership—attention has now shifted to the anticipated takeover by Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe.
One of the new ownership group’s first major decisions will be appointing a full-time manager, as Barry Ferguson’s interim role expires at the end of the campaign.
Mourinho linked with Rangers hot seat
Although some supporters may wish to see Ferguson continue, his chances have diminished following European disappointment. Instead, the incoming regime reportedly wants to make a bold managerial statement, according to TEAMtalk.
The outlet claimed on Sunday (20 April) that a stunning move for current Fenerbahce boss Mourinho is being considered. Encouragingly for Rangers, the Portuguese coach is said to be open to taking the job at Ibrox, despite being under contract in Turkey.
However, Rangers have yet to make a formal approach for him.
A marquee appointment for the 49ers
Though Mourinho’s stock may have dipped slightly in recent years, his track record remains impressive—with three Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League triumphs under his belt.
That Mourinho would entertain a move to Ibrox reflects the stature and appeal of Rangers as one of Europe’s historic clubs. While his contract with Fenerbahce runs until 2026, and a compensation fee would be required, securing his signature would mark a monumental statement of intent from the 49ers.
