Norwich City boss Johannes Hoff Thorup teases Emiliano Marcondes contract update

Norwich City manager Johannes Hoff Thorup has suggested that an announcement regarding Emiliano Marcondes’ contract extension is just around the corner.

The Danish midfielder joined the Canaries on a free transfer in October after leaving Premier League side Bournemouth in the summer. He signed a one-year deal with an option for a further 12 months. However, his standout displays this season have prompted fans to call for a longer-term commitment.

As previously reported by Football League World on April 10, Norwich have tabled fresh terms for Marcondes following his excellent form. Thorup’s recent comments indicate that a formal update on the deal could follow the Easter Monday fixture against Millwall.

“We’ll probably be able to give a bit more clarity after the Millwall game,” Thorup told The Pink Un. “Then everyone will know exactly where we stand regarding contracts with various players.

“But he’s been really important for us. He can relieve pressure from others because he thrives in those moments. He brings a lot to the team.”

Despite a mixed season for Norwich overall, Marcondes has emerged as one of the bright sparks. At £25,000-a-week (per Capology), he’s proven to be a smart acquisition, contributing five goals and six assists in 32 appearances as of April 21.

Thorup added: “He brings a presence to our attack. Sometimes we’re too reliant on perfect build-up play, but he can turn messy situations into chances. He’s smart, positions himself well, and always looks for opportunities in and around the box.

“He offers something different compared to our other attackers. His Championship experience is valuable, whether he starts or comes off the bench, and he’s been a great guide for the younger players.”
