Rangers Eyeing Steven Gerrard Return as Permanent Manager
Rangers are reportedly considering a move to reappoint Steven Gerrard as their full-time manager at the end of the current season.
Following Philippe Clementās dismissal in February, Barry Ferguson stepped in as interim boss. Although he guided the team to the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals, his record of just four wins in 10 matches is unlikely to secure him the role on a permanent basis.
Any final decision will hinge on the completion of the clubās takeover by a US consortium led by 49ers Enterprises. However, the prospective new owners are expected to pursue a fresh managerial appointment once their deal is done.
According to TEAMtalk, Rangers are keen to bring in a high-profile manager this summer, and a reunion with Gerrard is a real possibility. The former Liverpool captain is still held in high regard at Ibrox after guiding the club to their unbeaten Premiership title win in 2020-21.
Gerrard, who was dismissed by Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in January, is said to be very open to a return. One motivating factor is the expectation of greater financial backing under the new ownership than he received during his previous tenure.
Mourinho Also Linked
In a more ambitious twist, reports also suggest Jose Mourinho could be a potential candidate. The Portuguese manager is currently under contract with Fenerbahce until 2026 but is believed to be open to the idea of taking charge at Ibrox.
Despite the speculation, Rangers are yet to make a formal move for Mourinho, leaving Gerrard as the frontrunner to replace Ferguson once the season concludes.
