Hearts boss urges fans to direct criticism his way, not at young defender

Hearts manager Neil Critchley has strongly defended young defender Adam Forrester, urging supporters to aim any criticism at him rather than the 20-year-old, who has come under fire despite a solid performance in the Scottish Cup semi-final loss to Aberdeen.

Forrester, who started the season with Hearts B in the Lowland League, made his 30th senior appearance at Hampden, capping off a breakout campaign. While a section of the Tynecastle faithful have voiced concerns over his recent form both at matches and online, Critchley was quick to back the youngster, making it clear that responsibility for team selection lies solely with him.

“If Adam is receiving criticism, it should be directed at me, not him,” Critchley told the Edinburgh News. “He’s a young player having his first season in senior football. As a club, we’re often accused of not giving our youth a chance—well, we are now. Naturally, there will be highs and lows with young players. That’s part of their growth.”

The manager praised Forrester’s attitude and character, alongside fellow youngster James Wilson, both of whom he says have the right temperament for professional football. Critchley also reaffirmed his trust in the pair, explaining that development includes dips in form.

Forrester recently signed a contract extension through 2028, while Wilson penned a new deal until 2027 with an option to extend. Hearts plan to continue integrating youth into the senior squad, with several loaned-out players set to return this summer.

Midfielders Macaulay Tait and Finlay Pollock will come back from Livingston and Raith Rovers, respectively, to compete for first-team spots. Aidan Denholm has returned from Ross County, though he’s currently recovering from a hamstring injury. Wingers Callum Sandilands (Montrose) and Bobby McLuckie (Stenhousemuir), along with goalkeepers Harry Stone (Ayr United) and Liam McFarlane (East Fife), are also due back after their loan spells conclude.
