Rangers Begin Reshaping Hierarchy Ahead of American Takeover

Even before the highly anticipated American-led takeover is finalised, Rangers are already making strategic changes behind the scenes at Ibrox.

With this season’s hopes fading following the end of their European campaign, the focus has firmly shifted to ensuring a much more successful summer – one that lays the foundation to avoid a repeat of recent disappointments.

The managerial position remains up in the air, with Barry Ferguson currently in interim charge, while supporters remain fixated on updates surrounding the proposed US ownership.

Major Backroom Addition for Rangers

Positive off-field developments have emerged this week, with fresh investment backing the ongoing takeover process.

American duo Paraag Marathe and Andrew Cavenagh are driving the bid to acquire a controlling 51% shareholding in Rangers – which would grant them leadership of the club’s direction moving forward.

A significant move has already been made with the appointment of Kevin Thelwell as the club’s new sporting director, joining from Everton. Thelwell brings over 20 years of high-level football experience and an extensive global network of contacts.

During a challenging stint at Everton, Thelwell was seen as a respected figure who managed recruitment through difficult financial constraints. As new ownership shifts the direction at Goodison Park, Thelwell now turns his focus to rebuilding Rangers.

Former Everton defender Michael Ball, speaking to the Daily Record (25 April), described Thelwell as a “top-tier” hire for the Light Blues. He praised his deep knowledge of player scouting and recruitment – particularly through connections at Red Bull (from his time at New York Red Bulls) and a long spell at Wolves.

“Thelwell knows the profile of player that fits Scottish football,” Ball said. “He’s got the right mentality to push Celtic and help Rangers challenge for titles. His football network is world-class, and he won’t take shortcuts – even with money to spend.”

Ball also likened Thelwell to David Moyes in terms of fiscal responsibility, saying he treats club finances like his own. His ability to guide Everton through PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) challenges – including the high-value sales of Richarlison and Anthony Gordon – is seen as a key asset for Rangers.

A Game-Changer in Recruitment

Thelwell’s arrival could mark a turning point for Rangers’ recruitment strategy. If the incoming US investors follow through with their ambitions, he may be given the tools to overhaul the squad smartly and efficiently.

For a club in desperate need of consistency and stability, Thelwell’s experience and contacts could be crucial. His proven track record, particularly in navigating financial difficulties while maintaining competitive performance, could help steer Rangers back toward silverware.
