After 11 rounds of the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season, the Chiefs lead the standings, narrowly ahead of the Crusaders on points difference, with both sides sitting eight points clear of the third-placed Brumbies.

Rob Penney’s Crusaders secured a convincing 43-10 win over the Highlanders on Saturday evening in Dunedin. A standout display from All Blacks star Will Jordan helped the Christchurch outfit dominate their southern rivals. Fellow All Black Codie Taylor also crossed for two tries, although he spent time in the sin bin after receiving a yellow card in the first half.

Despite the comfortable result, Penney faces concern over starting fly-half Taha Kemara, who suffered a knee injury within the first 10 minutes. Kemara has been a regular feature in the Crusaders’ lineup this season.

Asked about his side’s potent attacking form, Penney credited his coaching staff.
“James Marshall and Brad Mooar, alongside our leadership group, have done a fantastic job creating a structure that lets our players show their talent and grow in confidence,” Penney told media after the match.
“It’s great to watch.”

Penney attributed the Crusaders’ resurgence this season to a collective effort across the squad.
“It’s simply good people doing great work. We’ve got access to a talented roster, everyone’s working hard to keep players fit and available, and we’re starting to see the results,” he added.

Although Kemara’s injury was a blow, Penney praised Rivez Reihana, who made a strong return after a lengthy injury layoff.
“I’m thrilled for Rivez. He’s been through a tough recovery, and for him to step in so smoothly speaks volumes about his dedication and the work from our support team.”

With the Crusaders heading into their bye week after a run of three intense New Zealand derbies, Penney is content with their progress but remains focused on taking things one step at a time.
“We’re staying within our bubble and taking it week by week. The boys deserve to celebrate today’s win—it’s never easy down here, and the Highlanders gave it everything as usual.
“We’ve had a big eight weeks since the last break, and after three derbies in a row, the bye has come at a perfect time for us to recharge. David (Havili) has been excellent in managing the physical demands to make sure we’re striking the right balance between hard work and recovery.”
