Leicester City Face Competition from Rangers for Russell Martin Appointment

Leicester City are set to battle Scottish heavyweights Rangers in their pursuit of Russell Martin as their next manager.

According to The Sun, the Glasgow club have shown interest in the 39-year-old, who previously had a loan spell at Ibrox during his playing career.

Martin has been without a club since parting ways with Southampton in December following a difficult start to their Premier League campaign. However, as the season nears its end and clubs begin planning for the summer and beyond, Martin’s stock is once again on the rise.

Leicester City and Rangers Eye Move for Russell Martin

Earlier this week, Sky Sports reported that Martin is among the candidates Leicester are considering to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy at the King Power Stadium this summer.

Meanwhile, GiveMeSport suggested that Southampton have even weighed up the possibility of reappointing Martin, though a return to St. Mary’s is viewed as unlikely.

Rangers have now also entered the fray, with reports suggesting Martin is open to a move back to Ibrox, where he spent part of his playing days. However, any managerial decision at Rangers is expected to be delayed until their ongoing takeover situation is resolved, with Leeds United’s 49ers Enterprises group rumored to be in talks to acquire a controlling stake in the club.

Similarly, Leicester’s appointment process is being held up by financial considerations, with Van Nistelrooy expected to remain in charge until the end of the current campaign before stepping down after a disappointing tenure.

Russell Martin’s Record at Southampton Evaluated as Leicester City Weigh Up Move

During his time at Southampton, Martin led the team to 33 wins in 73 matches. He notably guided them back to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs, securing a 1-0 victory over Leeds United in the final at Wembley.

However, once in the Premier League, Southampton struggled badly, managing only one win from 16 matches and sitting firmly at the bottom of the table at the time of his dismissal.

Leicester, now relegated to the Championship, are hopeful Martin could help them bounce straight back up if he takes the reins.

Leicester May Need to Rethink if Rangers Lure Martin Back to Ibrox

Given Martin’s recent success in achieving promotion with Southampton, it’s no surprise he’s attracting interest. While his time in the Premier League was challenging, it was widely accepted that the squad lacked the quality to survive.

Martin is known for his attack-minded style of play, which could endear him to fans if successfully implemented. With Leicester having struggled offensively this season, Martin’s approach makes him an appealing candidate.

However, with Rangers now making a move and able to offer the lure of European competition, Martin could be tempted to return to Ibrox instead, leaving Leicester to consider alternative options.
