Chris Sutton has built a reputation for being remarkably accurate with his predictions and analysis regarding Celtic and Rangers. The former Celtic striker often frustrates the Rangers faithful, but he has earned the admiration of Celtic fans for his generally fair and balanced commentary. Despite the occasional banter with his Sky Sports colleague Kris Boyd, Sutton tends to offer honest and sharp assessments of both Glasgow giants.

When Rangers’ campaign came to a disappointing early end last season, Boyd launched into a passionate rant about his former club’s struggles, just as Celtic celebrated securing their third consecutive Scottish Premiership title. Sutton, ever the sharp observer, didn’t let Boyd’s comments be forgotten, taking the opportunity to bring them up again recently.

Chris Sutton’s six-word reminder to Kris Boyd
Following Rangers’ collapse last season, Boyd lamented the decline of his former club in an emotional outburst, expressing how Rangers were a club historically “built on winning championships.” Sutton, quick to respond, pointed out the harsh reality: “Not in recent times,” he quipped. When Boyd retorted that Rangers still held the most titles overall, Sutton simply responded, “Give it a year.”

Fast forward to now, and with Celtic once again asserting their dominance in Scotland, Sky Sports cheekily resurfaced the exchange. Sutton couldn’t resist adding his own dig, posting on X (formerly Twitter): “I hate saying I was right but…” — a short but pointed reminder of how events unfolded just as he predicted.

Kris Boyd’s struggles to handle Celtic’s dominance
Boyd’s frustrations over Celtic’s continued success have become a familiar theme over the years. Last season, after Celtic’s win over Livingston, Boyd suffered an on-air meltdown over a penalty decision that went against the Hoops — only for Sutton and fellow pundit Robert Snodgrass to shut down his complaints with calm reasoning.

Another notable incident came when Celtic faced Kilmarnock, and after Killie’s goalkeeper clattered into Kyogo without a penalty being awarded, Boyd again erupted on Sky Sports. His grievances about refereeing decisions often seemed to reflect deeper frustrations over the gulf between Celtic and Rangers on the pitch.

There was even a rare moment of resignation from Boyd last season. After Rangers’ costly slip-ups against Ross County and Dundee — which came following a spirited but ultimately meaningless 3-3 draw at Ibrox against Celtic — Boyd admitted that Rangers had squandered their title hopes, sounding noticeably defeated in his analysis.

Recently, Boyd has been conspicuously absent from Sky Sports’ coverage as Celtic once again celebrated a Premiership title, leaving Sutton and others to oversee the latest triumph. Given Boyd’s history, it’s likely only a matter of time before another passionate outburst emerges. But for now, Sutton is enjoying the last laugh, having proven himself once again to be an astute voice in Scottish football.
