Michael Gannon has expressed his amazement at Rangers as they aim to salvage a disappointing campaign.
Despite making it to the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals once again, Rangers have endured a torrid season overall. They’ve failed to secure any domestic cup silverware, while bitter rivals Celtic secured the Premiership title with four games to spare and boast a 17-point lead.
Still, there’s renewed optimism at Ibrox amid a potential takeover by a US consortium featuring 49ers Enterprises.
Gannon reacted with disbelief to remarks made by fellow journalist Scott McDermott, who highlighted a staggering statistic about Rangers’ league form. McDermott noted that the Ibrox side dropped 13 points this season against just St. Mirren and Motherwell — managing only two wins in seven matches against them — calling it “unbelievable” during the Hotline Live show on April 29.
Gannon echoed that sentiment, calling the stat “incredible.” He argued that, given Rangers’ financial power, there’s no excuse for failing to beat St. Mirren at least three times over four encounters in a season.
“Fair play to St. Mirren and Motherwell, especially St. Mirren — they’ve done well. But it’s just not acceptable,” Gannon said. “With the resources Rangers have, you should be able to put together a team capable of winning those games.”
The upcoming takeover underscores the scale of the rebuild required at Rangers. Once the 49ers’ group finalises its 51 percent acquisition, the onus will be on them to close the growing gap with Celtic — a task that will demand smart recruitment and strong leadership at the helm.
