Liam Fox Sets Clear Expectations Ahead of Hearts’ Crucial Clash with Ross County
Liam Fox knows exactly what he wants from his Hearts side as they prepare for a pivotal SPFL Premiership encounter away to Ross County this Saturday. Training sessions at Riccarton have been intense, fast-paced, and full of energy, reflecting the gravity of the club’s situation. With Hearts battling to avoid relegation and under interim management for the second time this season, there’s no room for complacency—players must perform, coaches must motivate, and every point is vital.
Fox, who previously stepped in after Steven Naismith’s dismissal in September, returned to the helm last weekend following the sacking of Neil Critchley. Working alongside former Hearts defender Lee Wallace, the 41-year-old Edinburgh native brings a deep understanding of what the fans expect. Speaking to the Edinburgh News, Fox emphasized his commitment to sending out an attacking team, but he’s ultimately focused on getting the three points—no matter how they come.
“My goal has been to keep things straightforward and clear for the players,” said Fox. “There’s no time for excuses. This is the moment for Hearts to be aggressive, play on the front foot, and fight to win.”
Recent criticism has targeted the team’s lack of width and pace. Fox aims to make tactical changes that reflect his football philosophy, though he’s keeping specifics close to his chest. His approach centers on clarity, accountability, and simplicity—key elements for a team facing pressure and uncertainty.
One challenge is how to utilize all three strikers—Lawrence Shankland, Elton Kabangu, and James Wilson—without compromising the team’s balance. Critchley previously deployed Shankland in a midfield diamond, but Fox has ruled that out. “I’ll make decisions based on what’s best for the team, not individuals,” he said. “Some players may miss out, but that’s just part of football.”
Lee Wallace plays a crucial role in this interim setup. A product of the Hearts academy and a former captain at Rangers, Wallace is now a promising young coach who has Fox’s full trust. “Lee challenges me constantly, which is exactly what I need,” said Fox. “We don’t always see things the same way, and that’s a good thing. It helps both of us improve and provide clarity for the players.”
With just four matches left and Hearts only five points clear of the relegation play-off spot, the pressure is mounting. Fox is under no illusions about the stakes. “We need to outwork and outrun Ross County,” he stressed. “We’ve got quality in this group—now it’s about creating the structure and conditions to let it show.”
Midfielder Yan Dhanda could benefit from the managerial change. He scored the winner in Fox’s previous stint during a European win over Dinamo Minsk and may return to the squad against his former club. Fox has made it clear that every player starts with a clean slate. “I’ve told them—don’t give me an easy reason to leave you out,” he said. “Work hard, do the basics, and stand out in training.”
