Norwich City Surprises Fans with Birthday Message to Departed Star Jonathan Rowe

Norwich City’s social media team raised eyebrows by publicly wishing Jonathan Rowe a happy birthday on Wednesday—despite the winger’s contentious departure during last summer’s transfer window.

Rowe was a breakout performer in the 2023-24 campaign, scoring 12 goals as the Canaries reached the Championship play-offs under David Wagner, only to fall short against Leeds United in the semi-finals.

However, a cloud of transfer rumors surrounded Rowe during the offseason. When the new season began, the 22-year-old refused to play, reportedly due to mounting interest from other clubs. Eventually, he joined French side Marseille, initially on loan, in a deal worth £17 million including a future sell-on clause. He will officially become a permanent part of Roberto De Zerbi’s squad this summer.

Despite the high-profile move, Rowe has struggled to impress in France, managing just three goals in 25 appearances and starting only once in Ligue 1 since early November. Reports from France now suggest that Marseille is looking to offload him due to his underwhelming impact, though they remain obligated to complete the transfer.

The unexpected birthday message from Norwich sparked fan speculation online, with some wondering if it hinted at a potential return. While a few supporters would welcome him back, some say Rowe must apologize for refusing to play and pushing for a transfer. Others feel the club’s gesture was odd, considering the sour circumstances of his exit.

With Borja Sainz expected to be sold this summer, Norwich could have a gap on the left wing—an opportunity where Rowe could potentially re-establish himself, possibly on loan. However, any return would require mending bridges with fans still upset over how he left.

At just 22, Rowe still holds Premier League potential. Whether he can rediscover his form—and perhaps do so back at Carrow Road—remains to be seen.
