49ers and Thelwell aligned on new Rangers managerial appointment
Barry Ferguson hasn’t fared too badly as interim boss at Rangers, but it appears Thelwell and the 49ers are set on appointing a new full-time manager from outside the club.
According to the Daily Mail (30 April), although takeover talks are ongoing, all parties have reached a “broad agreement” that Thelwell must swiftly secure a new permanent boss.
49ers technical director Gretar Steinsson is expected to play a key role in the process, with the Icelandic official reportedly scouting candidates across Europe.
While Thelwell remains under contract with Everton until the end of June, the Mail reports that his responsibilities there will conclude on 25 May—coinciding with the end of the Premier League season—enabling him to shift focus to Rangers immediately. Behind the scenes, both he and Steinsson are already believed to be laying the groundwork.
Who’s in the frame for the Rangers job?
Since Philippe Clement’s departure in February, several names have been linked with the Ibrox role. Ferguson is a natural candidate after his strong European performances, though the team’s dismal league form—particularly at home—has damaged his prospects.
Steven Gerrard, who previously led Rangers to a title before joining Aston Villa in 2021, has emerged as a leading candidate, with reports suggesting he may be the frontrunner.
Another name being mentioned is former RB Leipzig manager Marco Rose, who is also reportedly under consideration.
