Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, currently without a job following his dismissal from Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq in January, has reignited speculation over a possible return to Ibrox after being filmed passionately expressing his love for the club during a night out.
The Liverpool legend, who famously guided Rangers to an unbeaten Premiership title win in 2021—ending Celtic’s pursuit of 10 consecutive league titles—remains a fan favorite and a frequent name linked to a managerial comeback at the club. Despite his struggles in management since leaving Ibrox for Aston Villa six months after that title triumph, Gerrard is still among the bookmakers’ top picks for a potential return.
With the 49ers Enterprises takeover of Rangers nearing completion, supporters are speculating that the new owners might pursue a high-profile managerial appointment—prompting calls from some fans for Gerrard to be brought back into the fold.
Fueling the excitement are two viral video clips shared on social media platform X. In one, Gerrard responds to a Celtic fan filming him with a strongly worded show of loyalty: “Listen Debbie, this f****** mushroom is a Celtic fan. We f****** love Rangers. F*** Debbie, I love Rangers.” In another, he enthusiastically shouts “Up the Teddy Bears” after being recorded by a fan attempting to sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone”—a song associated with both Celtic and Gerrard’s former club Liverpool.
Gerrard has previously stated he’s in no rush to return to management, but these recent displays of affection for Rangers have only added fuel to the ongoing rumors.
