Angus Gunn reflects on Norwich exit after brief talks with club hierarchy

Scotland international Angus Gunn has opened up about his departure from Norwich City, revealing that discussions around his future were minimal. The 28-year-old goalkeeper said he had just a brief two-minute chat with Sporting Director Ben Knapper before learning he would be released at the end of April.

Gunn, who joined the Canaries from Southampton in 2021, is set to depart alongside Onel Hernández and Jacob Sorensen following the expiry of their contracts. The decision came shortly before the dismissal of head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup.

Speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk, Gunn expressed disappointment at how the situation was handled: “As both a fan and a player, I’d have appreciated a proper conversation about what was possible. But I’m also a professional. I know my value, and if that doesn’t align with the club’s plans, I’m ready to move on.”

Over his four-year stint at Carrow Road, Gunn made 114 league appearances, including nine in the Premier League. He also enjoyed an earlier loan spell from Manchester City in the 2017/18 season, playing 46 times. Last season, he featured 35 times in the Championship.

Gunn’s ties to the club run deep — his father, Bryan Gunn, is a Norwich legend with 404 appearances between 1986 and 1998 and a brief managerial spell in 2009. Bryan was the Canaries’ first-choice goalkeeper during their famous third-place finish in the Premier League’s inaugural season.

Norwich, meanwhile, ended a disappointing 2024/25 campaign in 13th place — equalling their lowest Championship finish since 2018. Thorup was sacked in April after a 3-1 loss to Millwall, with Jack Wilshere stepping in as interim boss. While Wilshere remains a contender for the full-time role, the club has yet to make a decision ahead of a crucial summer.

Once the poster team for the Championship-Premier League cycle, Norwich’s recent campaigns have lacked momentum. Since their last Premier League relegation, they’ve only reached the playoffs once, suffering a 4-0 aggregate defeat to Leeds in 2024.

While Gunn is expected to attract new suitors quickly, Norwich faces greater uncertainty. Although goalkeeper Vicente Reyes extended his contract earlier this year, the club remains without a permanent manager and must now rebuild to regain competitiveness.
