Barry Ferguson has publicly expressed his desire to take on the Rangers job permanently, though it’s unclear whether his stint as interim boss has been convincing enough to secure the role. His tenure has produced a mix of highs and lows, with Rangers’ ongoing inconsistency potentially undermining his case for the top job.

Meanwhile, speculation continues to swirl around other managerial candidates, as the club appears to be closing in on a decision.

In a significant development, 49ers executive Paraag Marathe—who is spearheading takeover talks—was recently seen at Ibrox. While the deal is yet to be finalized, Marathe is reportedly playing a key role in identifying the next manager.

Derek Ferguson, Barry’s brother, told Ibrox News that Marathe likely has narrowed the list down to just a couple of candidates. He urged a swift decision to allow the club to begin major squad changes and prepare for next season after what he called an “embarrassing” campaign.

“We’re effectively in the off-season now,” Derek said. “Changes are needed across the board, and sorting out the manager should be the priority. With Kevin Thelwell already in, the next big step is finding someone who can make strong decisions quickly.”

As things stand, Barry Ferguson remains hopeful, though his odds have lengthened after a poor finish to the season. Steven Gerrard is currently seen as the frontrunner for a return, with former Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig boss Marco Rose also in contention. These names, possibly along with Ferguson, are believed to be in the final mix.

A prompt appointment is crucial as the club looks to reset and rebuild for a stronger campaign next year.
