Rangers’ Summer Transfer Plans Threatened by FFP Restrictions Amid 49ers Takeover
Rangers’ ambitions for a major summer overhaul are under pressure as UEFA Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations loom large, potentially limiting the club’s transfer activity despite an imminent ownership change.
The long-anticipated takeover by 49ers Enterprises is nearing completion, with intentions to reinforce the Ibrox club both financially and structurally. This includes investment in player signings and a host of off-field appointments—most notably a new manager, as Barry Ferguson is unlikely to be retained on a full-time basis.
However, those plans face early hurdles, with FFP rules placing constraints on how much the new owners can inject into the club due to existing valuations, assets, and debts.
Costly Commitments Weigh on Summer Activity
Even as the 49ers explore new investment channels—including a possible high-profile sponsorship deal with Red Bull—Rangers will still need to honour several outstanding transfer payments this summer. According to the Daily Record (6 May), instalments are due for previous acquisitions including Mohamed Diomande, Robin Propper, and Danilo.
The financial strain is further compounded by recent managerial payouts, including compensation for Philippe Clement, who departed in March. Ferguson, currently in interim charge with a mixed record of four wins, four draws, and four losses, is also expected to exit, potentially adding to those costs.
Balancing Ambition with Regulation
In light of these constraints, Rangers will need to generate fresh revenue to avoid breaching FFP limits. Success in ticket sales and securing European competition next season could prove vital in unlocking transfer flexibility.
Some movement has already taken place. The club has agreed a six-figure deal to sign Lyall Cameron from Dundee and has committed to a permanent move for Oscar Cortes following his loan from RC Lens. Meanwhile, a decision is still pending on whether to activate the £1.5 million purchase clause for Feyenoord defender Neraysho Kasanwirjo, who has not featured since November 2024 due to injury.
As the season draws to a close and the 49ers move closer to finalising their takeover, the challenge will be balancing financial caution with the ambition to catch Celtic at the top of Scottish football.
