Rangers Eye Sean Dyche as Leading Candidate to Succeed Barry Ferguson
With Barry Ferguson expected to depart once the current season concludes, Rangers will soon be in need of a new permanent manager—and Sean Dyche has emerged as a top candidate for the role at Ibrox.
Ferguson, a former Scotland international, took on the interim head coach position after Philippe Clement’s dismissal. However, his long-term future at the club appears uncertain, particularly as the prospective new owners accelerate their plans to finalize a takeover and bring in their preferred managerial appointment.
Gretar Steinsson is reportedly spearheading the managerial search on behalf of Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises. Among the names being considered, former Everton boss Dyche is seen as a standout option.
Dyche Urged as Ideal Fit for Rangers Project
According to journalist David Friel of The Scottish Sun, Rangers should seriously consider appointing Dyche once Ferguson exits. Speaking on Scottish Sun Sport (7 May), Friel emphasized that Dyche’s experience and leadership qualities make him a prime candidate to lead the club forward.
“I’d be inclined to go for someone like Dyche,” Friel said. “He already has connections through Kevin Thelwell at Everton, and I think he’s the kind of figure who could really establish an identity at Rangers. His track record, especially what he accomplished at Burnley, is very impressive.”
Friel added that Dyche not only possesses the managerial acumen to build a solid foundation at Ibrox but also has the charisma and resilience required to thrive in the demanding Glasgow football environment.
“I think someone with Dyche’s stature and experience is exactly what Rangers need at this point,” Friel concluded.
Ownership Change Brings Urgency to Decision
Former chairman Dave King has revealed that the sale of controlling shares at Rangers is close to completion, with approximately 90% of the process done. Still, fans are eagerly awaiting official confirmation of the US-led consortium’s takeover.
With the end of the season fast approaching, critical decisions loom for the Light Blues—not least of which is selecting the next permanent manager. While names like Marco Rose and former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard have been mentioned, no final decision has yet been made.
If Ferguson is indeed set to depart, the new ownership group should already have a successor lined up to ensure a seamless transition. The incoming manager will be vital in shaping the club’s summer recruitment strategy, and a delay in the appointment could impact preparations for the new campaign.
With Dyche’s name gaining traction, all eyes will be on the Ibrox boardroom to see whether the club opts for his proven Premier League experience to guide them into a new era.
