Rangers would be required to pay compensation to Sheffield Wednesday if they intend to appoint Danny Rohl as their new manager this summer.

Barry Ferguson is expected to depart Ibrox at the end of the season following the completion of the club’s takeover.

Dave King and other key shareholders have reportedly agreed to sell most or all of their shares to allow the San Francisco 49ers to reach a 51% ownership stake.

Rohl’s Release Clause a Potential Stumbling Block for Rangers

Although Rangers are planning to bring in a new manager ahead of next season, their transfer and staffing budget may struggle to accommodate Rohl’s release clause.

It’s believed that any club wishing to hire Rohl would need to pay £5 million in compensation to Sheffield Wednesday [talkSPORT].

David Edgar of Heart and Hand noted on X that the figure might be beyond what Rangers are prepared to spend, particularly given their historically cautious approach to transfer spending. Investing such a sum in a managerial appointment could prove challenging.

He stated: “On Danny Rohl – leaving Sheff Wed but has a release clause of 5m which would be a big investment for us. According to reports down there he has Bundesliga offers as well as Saudi.”

Why Rohl Could Be Worth the Investment

If Rangers are convinced Rohl is the right man to bring both immediate results and long-term success, the compensation could be seen as a worthwhile investment.

At just 36, Rohl has already revitalised Sheffield Wednesday—guiding them from relegation danger to a stable mid-table position in the Championship within 18 months, all while managing limited resources and internal issues.

His tactical philosophy—shaped through experience with Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig—relies on high-intensity, attacking football, which fits well with Rangers’ desire to compete with Celtic while playing an entertaining style.

His proven talent for developing young players and analytical coaching approach also make him an attractive long-term option. Interest from clubs like Leicester and Southampton underscores his growing reputation and readiness for a high-profile role.

Bringing in Rohl would demonstrate Rangers’ ambition and commitment to a modern, progressive managerial approach—potentially setting the foundation for lasting success both domestically and in Europe.
