Danny Rohl is emerging as a possible candidate to become the next Rangers manager once Barry Ferguson leaves Ibrox in the coming weeks.
Ferguson, a club legend, was handed the reins temporarily following Philippe Clement’s exit, and attention is now turning to who will lead the Glasgow side next season.
Rohl, currently at Sheffield Wednesday, has been linked with the role as Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises near completion of their takeover. The incoming owners have tasked Greatar Steinsson with identifying a new head coach. However, Rohl’s potential arrival hasn’t been universally welcomed.
Keith Jackson: Rohl’s appointment would be a shock
Journalist Keith Jackson described the idea of Rohl taking over at Rangers as astonishing, citing the 36-year-old’s limited managerial experience. Speaking on Hotline Live (8 May), Jackson expressed doubts about the German’s suitability and chances of success in the challenging Ibrox environment.
“A 36-year-old with very little experience as a manager, no knowledge of Glasgow or the club’s culture—it would be staggering if this happened, and even more so if he succeeded,” said Jackson.
Rangers must find a manager to rival Brendan Rodgers
With Celtic securing their fourth straight Premiership title, Cavenagh and the 49ers are under pressure to appoint a manager capable of ending their dominance. Although Ferguson managed a win and a draw against Celtic this season, his overall domestic results as interim boss haven’t impressed, particularly the lack of home victories.
Philippe Clement was heavily criticized for his poor Old Firm record yet remained in charge for an extended period. Now, Rangers are being urged to make a bold appointment to genuinely challenge Rodgers’ reign.
Steven Gerrard, who last led the Gers to league glory, has been linked with a return, but whether Rohl becomes the leading contender for the position is still uncertain.
