Rangers ease past Aberdeen amid subdued Ibrox atmosphere and takeover anticipation
Rangers claimed a comfortable 4–0 victory over Aberdeen at Ibrox on Sunday, with a dominant second-half display sealing all three points. After a goalless first half, the Gers came out with intent as Vaclav Cerny, Cyriel Dessers, Hamza Igamane, and Jefte all found the net in a commanding win.
Despite the emphatic scoreline, the mood at Ibrox was far from electric. With little left to play for this season, much of the fanbase appeared disengaged, already turning their focus toward the summer and what lies ahead — particularly with the expected 49ers Enterprises takeover on the horizon.
Attendance controversy sparks fresh frustration
Tensions between the club and supporters have been simmering, exacerbated by a recent incident involving the Union Bears over a disputed tifo display. Now, Rangers are facing criticism for reporting an official attendance of 50,343 for the match — a figure challenged by journalist Calum Crowe in the Scottish Daily Mail (12 May, page 58), who claimed the true number was likely at least 15,000 lower, accusing the club of inflating the numbers “to save face.”
Interim uplift but long-term questions remain
Barry Ferguson’s interim spell has provided a short-term lift, notably during Rangers’ run to the Europa League quarter-finals. Yet with their European adventure over and domestic form patchy, many fans remain disillusioned, hoping that a fresh direction will come with new ownership.
The anticipated takeover by 49ers Enterprises, expected to be finalised in June, offers promise of investment and renewal. Until then, Rangers find themselves in a holding pattern — with decisions looming both on and off the pitch. The hope is that under new stewardship, fan support will be reignited, and the need for cosmetic attendance boosts will be a thing of the past.
