Calls are growing louder for the Gold Coast Titans to make a bold move for disgruntled South Sydney superstar Latrell Mitchell, following reports of a major fallout between the fullback and Rabbitohs head coach Jason Demetriou.
The rift reportedly erupted after South Sydney’s 28-10 loss to the Canberra Raiders over the weekend, where tensions flared in the dressing room post-match. Sources close to the club suggest Mitchell, frustrated with his role and tactical instructions, engaged in a heated exchange with Demetriou that ended with the two needing to be separated by team staff.
Mitchell, 27, has long been a polarizing figure in rugby league — a player of immense talent, passion, and personality. But with the Rabbitohs now sitting precariously at 13th on the ladder and finals hopes fading fast, internal pressures appear to be boiling over.
A senior Rabbitohs source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the club is considering “all options” with Mitchell, including an early release from his contract, which currently runs until the end of 2027.
This has prompted a flurry of speculation across the league, with former players and pundits urging the Titans to seize the opportunity.
“Latrell needs a fresh start, and the Titans need a game-breaker,” said rugby league great Gordon Tallis on Triple M’s Rush Hour. “If they can manage him right, he could take them to a whole new level.”
The Gold Coast Titans, currently rebuilding under new head coach Des Hasler, are believed to be searching for a marquee signing capable of transforming their attack and drawing crowds to Cbus Super Stadium. With AJ Brimson struggling with injuries and Jayden Campbell’s future unclear, Mitchell could provide the X-factor the Titans have been lacking.
Fans on social media have already begun campaigning for the move, with hashtags like #LatrellToTitans trending across X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram.
Meanwhile, Rabbitohs management have remained tight-lipped, releasing only a brief statement: “Latrell Mitchell remains an integral part of our playing group. Internal matters will be addressed privately.”
But the mood around Redfern suggests the damage may be irreparable.
Former New South Wales coach Brad Fittler added fuel to the fire on Nine’s Footy Show, stating: “Latrell’s style of play needs freedom. If he’s clashing with the structure Souths want, then a move might be best for both parties.”
As the NRL transfer window heats up, all eyes will be on the Titans’ next move. With a war chest reportedly available after recent roster changes, they could be perfectly placed to offer Mitchell a lifeline and a new chapter in his controversial but compelling career.
For now, the rugby league world waits — and wonders — whether one of the game’s most gifted players will make the northern migration that could change the face of the Gold Coast franchise.
