Taiwo Awoniyi, the 27-year-old Nigerian striker for Nottingham Forest, is currently in an induced coma following a serious abdominal injury sustained during a Premier League match against Leicester City on May 11, 2025. The incident occurred when Awoniyi collided with a goalpost while attempting to convert a cross. Despite initial signs of recovery, the induced coma was deemed necessary to support his healing process

Awoniyi, who has been a key player for Forest since his transfer from Union Berlin in 2022, was substituted into the match in the 83rd minute. Shortly after, he suffered the abdominal injury. Due to the team’s lack of available substitutions, he continued playing until the end of the match.
