Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl is reportedly emerging as a serious contender for the vacant managerial post at Rangers.

The 36-year-old appears to be nearing an exit from Hillsborough, fueling speculation after making telling remarks about his future. Röhl has referred to his time at Wednesday in the past tense and confirmed that club owner Dejphon Chansiri is aware of the decision he has reached regarding his next move.

Röhl has been linked with several clubs, including Championship-bound sides Southampton and Leicester City, as well as Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig. There have also been reports of interest from Premier League clubs Fulham and Crystal Palace, who are each dealing with managerial uncertainty.

According to Sky Sports, Röhl is now being considered for the Rangers role, which became vacant after Philippe Clement was dismissed earlier this year. Barry Ferguson has since taken over in an interim capacity.

Rangers have been linked with a number of potential candidates, including former Barnsley defender Rob Edwards and ex-Middlesbrough midfielder Gary O’Neil.

Röhl has made no secret of his desire to manage at the highest level, and while the Scottish Premiership may not be one of Europe’s elite leagues, the opportunity to compete for domestic titles and potentially feature in European competitions could be an attractive prospect.

Since taking his first managerial role with Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023, Röhl has raised his profile considerably. Speaking to Kicker last week, he said:

“Personally, I had a fantastic time at Sheffield Wednesday. I’ve made no secret of my ambition to coach at the highest possible level with top players in the near future.
The Bundesliga is naturally an option. My situation at Sheffield is unofficially quite clear.
There’s a mutual understanding with the owner regarding how I see my future. Unfortunately, I can’t go into more detail right now.”
