Norwich City will not be turning to Russell Martin to fill their vacant head coach position, according to a report from the Pink Un. The Championship club is in search of a new manager following their decision to part ways with Johannes Hoff Thorup last month, having fallen well short of the play-off places.

The Canaries are planning a major summer rebuild and are now seeking a new head coach to lead the next chapter. Glen Riddersholm has also left the club, and Jack Wilshere is expected to move on too after being overlooked for the top job.

Among the early names linked with the role was former Norwich defender and ex-Southampton boss Russell Martin. The 39-year-old’s past ties to the club made him a popular choice among supporters. However, the Pink Un reports that Martin is not being considered for the position. The club has not reached out to him or his representatives since Thorup’s exit three weeks ago and appears to be pursuing other options. Martin has been out of work since his departure from Southampton in December.

No Fairytale Return

While many saw Martin as an ideal candidate due to his strong connection with Norwich and experience in the Championship, the club appears to be heading in a different direction. Martin’s track record of implementing a possession-based, progressive playing style at Swansea, MK Dons, and Southampton made him a compelling option—especially for a team looking to build a clear footballing identity.

Despite his credentials and fan support, Martin is reportedly being considered for other managerial roles instead.

What Norwich Are Looking For

As Norwich City begin their search for a new head coach, it’s clear the expectation will be to return to play-off contention. The incoming manager will need to achieve this while also nurturing young talent and implementing a distinct playing philosophy.

Although there is no immediate rush to make an appointment with the season having just ended, the club will want to bring someone in soon to oversee recruitment and prepare for pre-season.
