Celtic warned about pushing reunion trend too far with potential Kyogo return

Brendan Rodgers has already overseen the return of Jota to Celtic Park, and Kieran Tierney is expected to follow soon. However, concerns have been raised that trying to bring back Kyogo Furuhashi as well could be a step too far.

After Jota’s ill-fated move to the Saudi Pro League and an unsuccessful stint at Rennes, Celtic brought him back to Glasgow. Tierney, meanwhile, is poised to rejoin the club when his contract at Arsenal expires, marking a homecoming six years after his departure for North London.

Kyogo’s surprise January move to Rennes was met with confusion, especially as no replacement was secured. With his time in France also proving underwhelming, there have been suggestions that Celtic should consider re-signing the Japanese striker.

But former Scotland international Paul Dickov has urged caution, warning against repeatedly dipping into the past. He questioned whether Kyogo would even be open to a swift return.

“I don’t think they can keep bringing former players back,” Dickov told 10bet. “They’ve already done that with Jota, and Tierney is on his way too. Kyogo’s departure was a surprise, but would he want to come back so soon? I’d say it’s highly unlikely.”

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace loanee Jeffrey Schlupp could become a permanent option for Celtic, with his contract nearing expiry. Despite Tierney’s impending arrival and Greg Taylor being offered fresh terms, Dickov believes the ex-Leicester man would be a smart signing.

“I’ve known Jeffrey since his early days at Leicester,” Dickov said. “He’s incredibly versatile — capable of playing at left back, left wing, or even in central midfield. He started as a striker too. With that kind of flexibility and quality, he’d be a strong asset if Celtic can get him for the right price.”

Meanwhile, Leeds United are being tipped to consider a move for Daizen Maeda. The Japanese forward has thrived in a central role since Kyogo’s exit, drawing interest from Elland Road.

Former midfielder Lee Hendrie believes Maeda fits Leeds’ profile and budget.

“Leeds will be linked with a host of forwards this summer,” Hendrie told Football League World. “Bamford looks likely to leave, and while Piroe has done well, he’s more of a No. 10. Maeda has the scoring record and experience. Making the jump from Scotland to the Championship is a bit of a gamble, but it’s one worth considering given his output.”
