The San Francisco 49ers’ ownership group is reportedly nearing a deal to sell a six percent stake in the NFL franchise, with the transaction set at a record-breaking $8.6 billion valuation.

According to reports, club executives are preparing to offload the shares to three American families based in the Bay Area. Sportico states that an agreement has already been reached between 49ers officials and the prospective investors.

This high-value deal coincides with ongoing efforts by 49ers Enterprises — the club’s investment arm, operating independently from the NFL team — to secure a controlling stake in Rangers FC.

Andrew Cavenagh, working alongside 49ers Enterprises, is leading a bid to acquire 51% ownership of the Scottish club. It is understood that a pathway to achieve this majority stake has now been agreed.

In an official statement, Rangers FC confirmed:

“Rangers and its current controlling shareholders are engaged in productive discussions with the two principal members of the Consortium, Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises Global Football Group, regarding a potential takeover and fresh capital injection.

“These talks reflect a mutual commitment to the club’s long-term strategy, ambitions, and leadership.”

Former Rangers chairman Dave King previously indicated that a mid-June completion date was the target for finalising the deal.

Speaking to talkSport, King said:

“These discussions have been ongoing for quite a while. My first conversation with Andrew took place about six months ago to explore whether a mutually beneficial agreement was possible.

“As with any negotiation, there were moments of uncertainty. But in terms of legal documents and conditions still to be met, I would estimate we’re about 90 percent there.”

He added:

“There are still several steps remaining, including league approvals from the SFA and SPFL. These need to be sorted before the deal can close.

“If the deal is finalised around mid-June, as expected, they’ll have to act quickly. Champions League qualifiers are fast approaching. A May completion seems unrealistic, so mid-June is more likely for the new leadership to take charge.

“As for the managerial situation and potential candidates, I’m not privy to that information.”
