Celtic are set to earn around £7 million from Jeremie Frimpong’s anticipated transfer to Liverpool, thanks to a smartly negotiated sell-on clause. The Dutch full-back left Celtic for Bayer Leverkusen in January 2021 in a deal worth £11 million, but the Scottish champions ensured a 30% sell-on clause was included in the agreement.

With Liverpool reportedly ready to trigger Frimpong’s €40 million (£34.2 million) release clause, Celtic stand to pocket 30% of the profit Leverkusen make. Since the German side originally paid £11 million, the projected profit would be around £23 million, meaning Celtic would net approximately £7 million.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano says the move is close to completion. In recent updates on social media, he revealed:

  • “Talks between Liverpool and Jeremie Frimpong’s camp over personal terms have advanced again today. Player’s always been keen on the move and Liverpool are progressing on salary, length of contract, every detail of the agreement.”
  • He later added: “Jeremie Frimpong and Liverpool, just a matter of short time.”

Frimpong has been a standout performer in the Bundesliga, known for his pace, attacking threat, and suitability for high-tempo systems. He’s been integral to Leverkusen’s success and now looks ready for a big move to the Premier League.

The incoming funds could provide a timely boost for Brendan Rodgers as he looks to reinforce the Celtic squad during the summer window. It also highlights the long-term value of including sell-on clauses, especially for young talents developed by the club. Celtic’s investment in Frimpong continues to pay off, with the club now poised to benefit once again as he prepares to join one of England’s elite.
