Nicolas Raskin and Barry Ferguson were left furious after the Rangers midfielder appeared to score a legitimate goal, only for it to go unrecognized — and moments later, Hibs netted an equaliser.
In what was meant to be a low-stakes final match of the Premiership season at Easter Road, with neither Rangers nor Hibs able to change their league position, controversy erupted. Cyriel Dessers had already given Rangers the lead before chaos ensued 17 minutes later.
Raskin closed down Rocky Bushiri and seemed to force the ball over the goal line — with images suggesting the ball had clearly crossed. However, no goal was awarded, and within seconds, Hibs stormed up the pitch and Kieron Bowie made it 1-1.
A lengthy VAR delay followed, causing confusion. Referee Nick Walsh was seen listening to instructions, but it remained unclear what exactly was being reviewed. Many assumed VAR was examining Raskin’s denied goal, but the stadium screens indicated it was actually a potential offside in the build-up to Hibs’ goal that was under review.
Ultimately, VAR official Andrew Dallas ruled there was no offside and allowed the equaliser to stand. Raskin and Ferguson were visibly frustrated, confronting Walsh, especially as replays suggested the ball had indeed crossed the line on Raskin’s attempt.
So far, there’s been no official clarification on whether Raskin’s goal was even checked by VAR, leaving Rangers fans and players alike demanding answers.
