Thousands of Celtic fans have reportedly flooded Glasgow city centre to celebrate the club’s title win, despite the club’s appeals to avoid the Glasgow Cross and Trongate area.

Brendan Rodgers’ side drew 1-1 with St Mirren at Celtic Park earlier today (May 17), but it didn’t dampen the spirits as the Hoops lifted the Scottish Premiership trophy, sparking jubilant celebrations among supporters.

However, scenes of disorder are said to be unfolding as thousands of fans ignored official warnings and made their way into the city. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes with green flares being ignited and supporters gathering on top of a subway station.

One witness told GlasgowLive: “Thousands of Celtic fans are disregarding the club’s last-minute request to stay clear of Glasgow Cross and Trongate. It’s already descending into chaos even before the main crowds have arrived from Parkhead. Green flares are going off, and several hundred fans waving banners are on the roof of the subway station. Around 200 police officers are currently present.”

This comes after reports of a tense confrontation in George Square earlier, where Celtic fans allegedly clashed with Orange walk participants. Footage from the incident shows bottles and cans being thrown during the altercation.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Sutherland of Police Scotland previously addressed the situation, saying: “We’re aware of concerns regarding expected large gatherings in Glasgow on Saturday. We’re working in partnership with Glasgow City Council to reduce disruption, and a proportionate policing plan is in place, focused on public safety.

“We support the right to peaceful assembly but urge everyone to act responsibly and consider the impact on local businesses and fellow residents. Please avoid large gatherings and be mindful of others.”

Police Scotland has been contacted for further comment.
