Former Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis has made a heartfelt revelation, expressing his strong desire to one day return to the club he still considers his home.

The Greek forward arrived at Celtic during Ange Postecoglou’s early tenure, as the squad underwent significant changes in the wake of the pandemic. Despite joining as the Eredivisie’s top scorer, Giakoumakis found his opportunities limited due to injuries and the consistent form of Kyogo Furuhashi, who was preferred in the central striker role.

However, Giakoumakis delivered one of his most memorable performances in February 2022. With Celtic trailing against bottom-placed Dundee and pressure mounting in the title race, he scored a perfect hat trick — with his left foot, right foot, and a header — to secure a vital 3-2 victory. That result sent Celtic three points clear of Rangers and was seen as a crucial turning point in their campaign.

Now 30 and playing for Cruz Azul in Mexico, Giakoumakis admitted to Record Sport that a return to Parkhead remains on his mind.

“You want to start something? I’d love to play for Celtic again,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s a dream or something that could actually happen — but who wouldn’t want to? When you’ve already experienced what it means to be there, you understand just how special it is.

“If someone played for Celtic, did well, and a couple of years later says he wouldn’t go back — that guy is dumb. Seriously. So yes, I’d absolutely love to wear that shirt again. Maybe my time there isn’t finished. That’s the truth.”

Giakoumakis wrapped up his time at Celtic with a late goal in the League Cup against Kilmarnock — a fitting farewell. Despite starting just 11 of 38 league matches that season, he finished as the club’s top scorer. He departed for Atlanta United in February 2023 in a deal worth around £4.3 million before eventually making the move to Liga MX.
