Veteran halfback Mitch Drummond will make his first start of the season in what marks a significant milestone—his 150th appearance for the Crusaders. The seven-time Super Rugby champion will reach the feat during a southern derby clash against the Highlanders in Christchurch, a fitting setting for the Nelson-born stalwart to join the franchise’s elite.

“When the team was announced, the boys really rallied around me. It’s been a special week so far, and I’m excited for Friday,” said Drummond. “Hitting 150 games was something I aimed for at the beginning of the year, and I always believed it was achievable.”

Crusaders head coach Rob Penney praised Drummond’s character and impact on the team, expressing pride in naming him for the occasion.

“Mitch always puts the team first. His dedication is unmatched, and his leadership connects people in an incredible way,” Penney said. “It’s a privilege to give him the chance to run out in front of his family and supporters for such a major milestone. Not many players hit 100 provincial matches and 150 Super Rugby games—he’s earned every bit of recognition coming his way.”

In other team news, All Blacks prop Tamaiti Williams moves to the opposite side of the scrum in Fletcher Newell’s absence, while Jamie Hannah joins the starting XV in place of Antonio Shalfoon.

Among the reserves, former Waratahs prop Lewis Ponini is in line for his Crusaders debut, named in jersey 17. Dallas McLeod, who has previously featured for the All Blacks, could celebrate his 50th cap from the bench.
